TOTAL LIBERATION – READING REVIEW

In a world with no centre of power, where can we as anarchists direct our rage? Previously there have been kings, lords or factory bosses who we could identify as the enemy. But in this nebulous world of capital, our enemy is an entire system and an internalised psychology that needs new strategies to resist. This is the quandary that Total Liberation, published anonymously in 2019, confronts.

To bring us up to speed Total Liberation provides a brief history of radical ideology. An anarchist critique of Marxism as narrow-mindedly focussing on class is easy, and turns over no new stones. However it also provides a valuable critique of more modern identity politics and its obsession with atomising and itemising oppressions, that have won mostly liberal reformist victories.

Instead Total Liberation draws its inspiration from Murray Bookchin’s social ecology. However while Bookchin was unfairly dismissive of anarchism, and particularly antispeciesism, the author distils from these polemics a holistic understanding of the existential threats to the planet, and goes a step further by applying it to anti-speciesism and biocentrism. It therefore straddles a complex understanding of hierarchy to show that not only are all fights interconnected, they also ultimately have a common enemy.

However just as there is no central focal oppression, there is also no focus of power against which to direct our efforts. Our fight must therefore be similarly decentralised, comprised of autonomous affinity groups and rather than the large unions and political parties of the early 20th century. Total Liberation therefore provides hope to anarchists – these tactics are our bread and butter and should come naturally. Indeed, it often uses the examples of the ALF and ELF to illustrate how cells of individuals have inflicted millions of pounds of costs to heavy industry. Total Liberation does perhaps overstate the revolutionary potential of sabotage actions. That is, however much money such actions cost ecocidal industries, these industries do still exist and are constantly expanding. We need to recognise that either these actions need to be overwhelmingly more widespread, or massively more destructive.

The biggest challenge it provides to anarchism, however, is that in the face of the climate crisis, we really are fighting for our lives. No matter how insulated we are from it, almost everyone’s lives will be radically altered by global warming. It predicts a future not too far away when capitalism will not be able to put food on the shelves, a rather prescient observation considering the pandemic that was to come less than a year after this book was published. We must therefore work to build alternatives to live by, that will provide for the material and social needs of people by providing food, shelter and care without the state. As much promise we can find in our social centres and autonomous zones, the author identifies the need for such spaces to not just be refuges for radicals, but bases from which to organise and create our alternatives outside the state.

At this point Total Liberation draws inspiration from the seminal eco-anarchist book Desert, and calls for recognition that for better or worse, catastrophic climate change has already begun and is irreversible – a terrifying opportunity for us. Although it will likely create space for fascism to flourish and industry to develop into previously frozen landscapes, it will also create the space for anarchist revolution. The author highlights the success of the Rojava revolution in doing so – undoubtedly inspirational but does gloss over the terrible cost of the Syrian civil war, and also the revolution’s dependence western state power. This criticism is a nitpick, however. The point is revolutions never fit a perfect plan and nor should they. We should be dynamic and adapt to our local needs. It is an intimidating realisation that everything we want really is in our reach. The question is whether we have the courage to organise now and seize the opportunities as they arise.

Total liberation sums it up best with this passage:
“Within such an unforgiving context, it is necessary to take a side. That can be done with courage and purpose, or we could resign ourselves to getting swept up yet again, only this time by the most genocidal of centuries… Waging war with the system of death, far from being a matter of declaration, merely faces up to the reality that already engulfs us.”

FIFTY DEER RELEASED FROM A HUNTING FARM

27th March, Florida USA

received anonymously via email:

“On March 27th, 2022, 50 whitetail deer were given access to freedom by dismantling the electric fence and cutting the deer fence that confined them at Sweetwater deer farm in Bristol, Florida. We watched as at least 20 of them escaped into the night, and it was a beautiful sight.

Let the wild be wild!

Against all prisons, both human and non-human.

FOREST ANTI-SPE DAYS #3 DATES ANOUNCED.

What? An anarchist, antispeciesist and horizontally organised gathering

When? End of July.

Where? Hambacher Forst (so called Germany)

“CHAOS AND RAGE, SMASH EVERY CAGE

BORDERLESS CALL:

JOIN US IN THE HAMBACHER FOREST FOR A GATHERING FOR ANIMAL LIBERATION!

In the factory farms and vivisection labs, our nonhuman comrades are already fighting back. The time is ripe – let’s share skills and perspectives on how to support their resistance! By “anti-speciesism” we don’t mean online activism, vegan capitalism or cop-hugging pacifism – we’re opening a space to plot against human supremacism, and we’ve no need for bureaucratic organizations of any kind.

Many animal rights groups have become a hotbed for fascist/homophobic/cissexist/macho/white supremacist/colonialist views and behaviour. Others promote liberalism, the state or single out human activists as animal “saviours”. We want to build on two years of anti-spe days explicitly pushing against these tendencies, uncompromising in our rejection of all forms of oppression and domestication. Let’s meet each other and make some trouble!

You can find us again in the Hambacher Forest, one of Europe’s largest autonomous spaces, still squatted after almost 10 years. (It’s a forest so be ready to camp).

We want the workshops to be more horizontal this year – you can help us by proposing your own! Some ideas we have so far:

– First aid/veterinary care for other animals
– Action planning/scouting
– Hunt sabotage
– Tech workshop
– Sharing international struggles
– Anti-civilisation anarchy + anti-speciesism
– Animal liberation + chaos
– Open discussion on abolishing pets
– Graffiti skillshare
– Self-defence
– Action climbing
– Movie night
– Theater performance (!?)
– Open mike night

Pack a sleeping bag – and coffee and peanut butter if you got it! Make it here however you can and see you in July!

More workshops/other info to be announced over next while. And be in touch if we can answer questions or otherwise help.

Make trouble + have fun (;

THE ANIMAL RIGHTS MILITIA ULSTER BRIGADE ISSUES A WARNING AGAINST THE BADGER CULL IN IRELAND

24th March, Ireland.

received anonymously via email:

“Today, the 24th March 2022, Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, along with the fascist DUP’s Agriculture Minister, Edwin Poots, announced that they have green lit the proposed badger cull. This comes just days after the headline news in the United Kingdom of yet another group of researches finding that the culling of badgers is an inhumane and inefficient method of reducing cases of Bovine Tuberculosis.

The proposal itself was essentially a sweetener for the farmers of the north; who had been, up until Brexit, been getting 100% compensation for each reactor cow. Now that we’ve left the EU, that money has dried up and the farmers have been expected to accept a cut. Badgers are being scapegoated here. Farmers have been let down by DAERA and Edwin Poots for years with inadequate tests. This badger cull won’t bring them the hassle-free days that they are expecting.

We, the Animal Rights Militia of Ireland, call on Edwin Poots and DAERA to backtrack on the cull or face serious resistance. We will no longer stand by and let our native Irish wildlife be tortured by people who deny science. Edwin Poots, a religious fundamentalist, has denied rights to many various groups of humans over the years and is now doing the same to the animals that inhabit the north of Ireland too!

Enough is enough! ARM Ireland, and our Ulster Company in particular, will have boots on the ground to ensure that no cull takes place in the zones outlined in the proposal documents, of which we have acquired.

We would like to make DAERA and Edwin Poots aware that they are putting contractors lives at risk by offering them the job of culling badgers. Force WILL be met with force. Contractors will be publicly outed and should they harm one singular hair on an animal, they will face whatever consequences we see fit. No action is off limits. We will no longer be bullied by fascists (Loyalist, Eco or otherwise!)

Think carefully.
ARM Ireland – Ulster Brigade”

SUPPORT RADICAL ANIMAL LIBERATION MEDIA!

Over the 5 years we’ve been working we have brought you much news about the animal liberation movement, we’ve organised workshops and even gatherings. We’ve served as a platform for anonymous reporting and supported multiple prisoners. This is all done off the backs of volunteers who do not make any money and just do it to further the movement.

Sadly over time we have been recieveing less and less donations and sometimes we haven’t been able to do all the projects we’d like to.

This month we are at a crossroads with a huge bill to pay, to cover servers, domains and other tech related stuff. If we don’t manage to pay it a big part of our platform will be gone. We have some regular donations coming in from our patreon supporters, which we are incredibly grateful for. But that will not be enough to cover all our costs and it will mean that arrest and prisoner support is halted for the month.

So if you can afford it and you aren’t gonna put yourself out of pocket then please drop us some coins. We have patreon/PayPal/bitcoin linked below.

If you can’t afford it, maybe send this to your rich uncle or share it with all of your mates, or mention UA to whatever animal rights funding groups you can think of!

Support your radical animal lib media, this project is yours as much as it is ours.

KNOWN ANTI ANIMAL LIBERATION HUNTER GETS HIS LODGE DESTROYED. THREE RIFLES STOLEN, 50 DECOY BIRDS LIBERATED.

Delayed report, November 2021, Italy.

According to local media, William Baccini’s hunting lodge was visited by the ALF last year. Taking advantage of the fact that the family home was empty for the night, a group of people entered the building, destroyed all furniture, TV and windows, made holes on the roof using a pick axe, freed over fifty decoy birds and after dousing the place with gasoline, left the building with three rifles that then were decomissioned and abandoned in the woods.

William is head of the “Hunting and Tradition” group, an association of hunting groups who attempt to lobby the government in Italy as well as being very vocal about animal rights activists.

William had set up wildlife cameras outside the abode in fear of attack, but all he got was some blurry photos of masked, hooded up individuals.

BANKS ATTACKED IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE ATLANTA FOREST.

26th March, Philadelphia USA.

received anonymously via email:

“This month we sabotaged card slots of Wells Fargo and Bank Of America in Center City, Philadelphia. This attack was done in solidarity and complicity with those disrupting the construction of a police training grounds in Atlanta. Cops in Atlanta want to cut down a forest to build a mock city to practice squashing uprisings. In response, individuals are occupying, protesting, and sabotaging. People have started staying in the forest and fucking with the construction. The Atlanta Police Foundation is being funded by Wells Fargo and Bank Of America. We are excited to hear about construction workers being chased out and construction vehicles being messed up.

As proponents of self-directed revolt we decided to target the banks contributing to building the cop city. We hope that by communicating our action others feel encouraged or inspired to attack and disrupt the social order in their own context. While it would be preferable if the police project in Atlanta collapsed, for us destruction is an end in itself. We take pleasure in disrupting capital.

Our sabotage involved collecting plastic cards, which we cut into thirds. The purpose of this was to prevent the cards from easily being removed. Before going out we wiped down the pieces with gloves on and dressed anonymously. We inserted the pieces into atm and door card readers after putting a strip of super glue onto them. One benefit of this action is that it fucks up the machine without making a lot of noise or seeming out of place. We feel this is relevant to point out because the cop city is an example of the police preparing for mass unrest and we feel it is strategic to be able to act discreetly in light of increasing policing and surveillance.

Fuck cops
Fuck banks and money
Solidarity and complicity with the feral anarchists in Atlanta
Death to civilization
Long live anarchy
Chaos forever”

MINING SECRETS: HUGE HACKED DATA DUMP SHOWS THE REALITY OF COMPANIES MINING ON INDIGENOUS LAND.

El Estor is a nickel mine in Guatemala owned by Solway, a Swiss mining company that is willing to go to any lengths to keep making profits.

The nickel resources around the mine happen to be just below the surface of land indigenous folk live on, and for many years there has been a serious fight to not only stop the company from digging up their home but also to stop the company’s continuous pollution that is affecting everybody’s health, murdering uncountable endangered species and destroying the land around it.

In 2009, Adolfo Ich Chaman, leader of the indigenous community, was brutally murdered by mine security. In 2016, due to the precarious conditions within the mine, an explosion injured over twenty workers and killed at least six. In 2017, during the fishermen’s protests demanding a stop to the polluting of the lake, Carlos Maas was shot dead by riot police. The two journalists that covered his murder were the only people charged with anything after his death.

A hacking group called Guacamaya decided to fight back and released 4.2 TB of internal documents showing the lengths that Solway is prepared to go to displace the indigenous community. From bribes to judges, police and government officials to creating economic dependency within the community, Solway was willing to pay their way to bulldoze the land murdering animals, plants and trees. If the indigenous community wasn’t willing to move, then they had even more sinister plans, like setting fire to key parts of the forest to destroy their livelihood or spread false rumours about the community leaders having HIV “due to their promiscuity”. To Solway, the health of the earth, the life of animals and the worth of the indigenous community were lesser than their hunger for money. The mining company has carried out many of these plans, burning irreplaceable chunks of the forest and terrorising both individuals and the whole community.

Forbidden stories broke the news at the beginning of March, releasing the work that over 65 journalists from across the globe had done analysing the data dump that Guacamaya had handed them over.

At the same time, Guacamaya released their statement, which can be read in Spanish and is linked at the bottom of this article. Guacamaya did not stop there tho. They want you to know that everybody can do this job and they put a video together of how they hacked this multinational company, using open-source software. We have linked that video below too.

Check the resources linked below to learn more about the hack, the indigenous peoples’ struggle against Solway and the tools and methods that Guacamaya used to hack them.

From UA, we want to echo the words of Guacamaya. “Infiltrate and sabotage with rebellious joy!”; but we also want you to think. A big part of our readers is part of the West. Have you ever stopped to think how deeply our consumption affects the earth? And if you have, have you put faces to the people that we are hurting with our insatiable thirst for progress? Watch the videos published by Forbidden Stories to meet the people affected by Solway. Solway is a Swiss-based company. They live in Europe and they profit from the destruction of the indigenous communities of Guatemala whilst comfortably sitting on their sofa at home. They are giving orders to pollute rivers, burn forests down and murder the people on the ground who resist. While this mine is far away for many of you, the people who run and profit from it are closer than you think. Are you part of the resistance?

AT LAST SOME GOOD NEWS ABOUT ERIC KING! – PRISONER SUPPORT

Eric was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2014 after a Molotov cocktail attack on a congressional office in Kansas City in solidarity with the Ferguson demonstrations. Since he was served his sentence, guards have conspired with white supremacist prisoners to beat Eric multiple times, and in 2018 Lieutenant Correctional Officer Donald Wilcox took him into a closet, away from cameras, and beat him as part of an “attitude adjustment”. Eric was later charged assaulting a corrections officer.

Throughout last week, his case was heard in court, and the guards told all sorts of lies like a bird had managed to enter the prison and messed up his cell and spilled coffee on his legal documents.

On Thursday, the jury returned a ‘Not Guilty’ verdict after seeing through the lies of the prison officers that had been conspiring to ultimately kill Eric.

Because of this Not Guilty verdict, Eric will be out of prison in December 2023, but until then he really needs to hear as much animal rights and antifascist news as possible. Eric needs to feel the support of his comrades and to know that he is not alone facing the fascist prison officers in the jail.

Please write to Eric and give him lots of love:
