GRASSROOTS ANIMAL LIB MOVEMENT IN THE UK – APRIL ROUND UP.

April has been a big month for the British grassroots Animal Freedom movement.

First up came the news that Oxford Greyhound Track has closed! This is a huge blow to an industry that is racing itself into the ground. This latest closure is a result of the track owner falling into debt with their broadcaster, SIS. In a struggling industry, with just 17 tracks remaining (down from a peak of 300), SIS couldn’t afford the dead weight and cut Oxford loose, leaving them unable to operate. To ensure this truly is the beginning of the end, a new pressure campaign has been launched to urge SIS to cut ties with what remains of the greyhound racing industry. Next came an epic ten-day convergence of activists and groups, including CAFT (Campaign to Abolish the Fur Trade), AAC (Animal Activism Collective) and others, in London. The event started with dozens of activists inside Louis Vuitton on Bond Street, while nearly a hundred more occupied the street outside, and closed down every single fur retailer on the street.

The convergence coincided with the launch of a campaign to get Visa to drop sponsorship of Milan Fashion Week. After a number of run-ins, home demos, and satellite actions across the world, it came as little surprise that the multi-billion-dollar company announced it was pulling its sponsorship almost as soon as the convergence wrapped up. This was the second major victory that week, as on the first day of the convergence, Etsy announced they were ending all fur sales on its platform. MBR Acres, the notorious puppy factory farm in Cambridgeshire that breeds dogs for the UK research industry, was dealt quite the blow in early April when not just one but both its insurance providers cut its cover. They were followed by MBR’s auditors at the end of the month. This has caused a noticeable reaction from MBR, who have been complaining to the government that they’ll leave the country since last May. Morale is at an all-time low, and both MBR and the British state are struggling with how to keep this failing company in the UK. Our advice? Shut the door on your way out: https://www.facebook.com/groups/mbrsuppliers

For the first time in over a decade, Animal Aid have released undercover footage from inside two British laboratories, showing the gruesome fate of the MBR beagles, as well as many other animals, including monkeys, pigs, and rabbits. The footage is truly horrifying and demonstrates exactly why we need to close down MBR and this entire industry once and for all. https://www.toxicity.inc/gb

Dorset Animal Action have secured a great local victory this month, after a member of the public filmed the ‘owner’ of Bournemouth Goats violently dragging animals down a busy street. Bournemouth Goats were licensed by the local council to graze the clifftops and exhibit non-consenting animals at local events. Following a brief but powerful campaign by DAA, supported by Animal Aid, which gained national media attention, the council revoked Bournemouth Goat’s license to publicly exhibit animals at events: https://www.instagram.com/dorsetanimalaction

Since the 1970’s, April 24th has been recognised as World Day for Animals in Laboratories. Thanks to the FEAT (Finally Ending Animal Testing) campaign, this is now a full month of FEAT actions, including street theatre, banner drops, letter-writing events, and protests, taking place throughout April. The annual World Day march is usually held on the nearest Saturday to the 24th, but activists from the Manchester Animal Rights Network (MARN) got ahead of the game, with 50 campaigners gathering in Manchester to hold lively protests outside (and inside) suppliers of MBR Acres: https://www.instagram.com/manchesteranimalrightsnetwork

Two days later was the World Day march itself, which this year took to the streets of London. 400 people marched from Trafalgar Square to DSIT, the government department which is currently conspiring to keep MBR Acres open. A sea of noise, signs, and defiance, the march held Westminster to account for lying about their plans to ‘phase out’ testing on animals, before heading for the Home Office. This is where all animal testing licences are granted! London was left in no doubt that testing on animals will end, and that it’s our generation that will end it. Next year’s World Day has already been confirmed for Saturday, 24th April, outside of LabCorp in Huntingdon. Mark it in your diaries!

KILL THE BILL PROTESTS AND ACTIONS

Normally on flammable we bring you two or three different bits of news about other struggles, but seeing as stuff is kicking off in the UK, some comrades felt that focusing it around the proposed “Police, crime and sentencing Bill” would be a good idea.

The UK parliament is pushing a new law that threatens the right to protest, sending people who are taking part in “very annoying or inconvenient” protests away for up to ten years in prison, as well as criminalising the very existence of travellers and Roma folk by criminalising trespass and adding prison sentences to the “crime”. It even mentions the possibility of deportation for foreign folk who accept a caution at a protest, or who are found guilty of being part of an inconvenient protest. It is a dangerous law that affects protest camps, targets homeless folk and ensures hunt sabs will not be able to do their job, for example, and amplifies the already brutal powers that the police has to stop dissenting voices.

For that reason, thousands of people have taken to the streets in major cities across the UK. Protests, demonstrations, and even unapologetically militant actions have taken place to oppose the proposed law, and it is believed to be on the increase.

Folks have taken many forms of creative action. We’ve seen banner drops deployed on trees by climbing activists, people purposely trespassing to liberate animals or smashing traps, and multiple squats have popped up in defiance to the PSCB.

Last Thursday, and after organising a free food share in a pizza squat in London, riot police entered RAT’s new occupied restaurant and launched a violent attack against the squatters inside. Someone was beaten unconscious, and everybody was arrested on bogus charges.

Police brutality doesn’t end there. Bristol has seen riot police repeatedly hitting folk with batons for committing the crime of not moving from the floor, and this morning it surfaced that a journalist was tricked into getting close to the police just to be arrested and another journalist was badly beaten whilst filming the demonstration.

Folks are taking action to protect the right to protest and they are doing so in whatever manner they believe is right. In an interview, someone who was present during the first Bristol protest said “Soon we will not be able to go out on the streets to demonstrate, so it does not surprise me that someone burnt that police van. If we are gonna go to prison, we might as well give them fire”.

From squatters to folks fighting for the earth, ALF activists and even folks without any political background are fighting this bill. If you are in the UK, leaderless demos are being called in multiple cities. They advise folk to wear black and to mask up to keep safe. From abroad, folks are calling for over and underground actions in solidarity to make as much noise as possible about the new authoritarian law.

Solidarity with our comrades in the UK fighting this madness.

 LIBERATE OR DIE.

FLAMMABLE (ANARCHONEWS) – WHEN THE PEOPLE BITE BACK.

In this edition of flammable we bring you three stories for you to read and develop knowledge in other struggles that surround us. Please take the time to do your research and learn, all stories are linked!

1- EIGHT ANARCHISTS LOCKED UP AWAITING TRIAL IN BARCELONA DURING A DEMONSTRATION IN SOLIDARITY WITH PABLO HASEL.

Pablo Hasel was taken to prison a couple of weeks back accused of promoting terrorism for writing songs calling the King of Spain a thief. There have been multiple demonstrations throughout Europe, but Barcelona and Madrid have become focal points of struggle in solidarity. On the 27th of February and as part of the riots, the police raided two squats in Barcelona and arrested 8 comrades accused of setting a police van on fire with a cop inside. They are now awaiting trial whilst in prison and facing attempted murder, organised criminal association, conspiracy, unauthorised demonstration, aggression, public disorder, assault and violence against public officials and damages. We do not have addresses to write letter, but we will update that as soon as we do.

2- EXPROPRIATION OF BOOKS FROM CAPITALIST WAREHOUSES.

In solidarity with Lukáš Kalina, who was just released after serving prison for shoplifting bread, an anonymous anarchist claimed responsibility for the expropriation of books from a warehouse. They say:

“They will only issue them to us in exchange for money. For a lot of money! These are their rules, which I do not accept. I therefore expropriated books for which the capitalists wanted to pay a total of 5980 CZK (230 EUR). I didn’t give them any money at all. I will share books now. I will use some in favor of organizing fight.

Only a general uprising can overthrow capitalism. But when he doesn’t come, I won’t just wait passively and suffer obediently. By expropriation, I take back pieces of what was stolen from us.”They mention Project Magpie, an initiative inciting folks to expropriate what they (or their communities) need.

3- DIMITRIS KUOFONTINAS IN CRITICAL CARE + SOLIDARITY ACTIONS IN RESPONSE.

Dimitris was locked up in Greece in 2002 and has been serving his sentence ever since. The Greek state in their blatant attempt to repress anarchism in their territory, passed a law in December where anarchist prisoners do not get to serve sentence in “rural prisons” (a concept of prison where inmates work the land growing veg) as they are “dangerous political terrorists”. Dimitris was immediately transported to max security. The 8th of January, Dimitris started a hunger strike that lasted 59 days, as two days ago he was rushed into critical care and today he was force fed by the state using an intubation system.

The decision to force feed him today is a vague attempt at keeping him alive out of fear for the repercussions that his death will have in the greek territory. Folks around the world have shown solidarity in many different ways, from huge demonstrations and banner drops to arson attacks against military and prison vehicles and even police stations and the prosecutor’s office. Those actions are believed to be on the increase due to the force feeding order by the state.

FLAMMABLE – A FEW ANARCHIST NEWS.

Apparently Flammable is not a weekly occurrence, but more of a whenever we can, want, have the time and can be arsed, truly anarchist and whatnot. We bring you four news and a text for you to read that have nothing to do with animal liberation but have everything to do with the revolution. Enjoy.

1- ITALIAN POLICE STATION IS SET ALIGHT.

A moto scooter garage at a police station in Marassi, Genoa, was set alight by persons unknown. At least one scooter was burnt and another two were damaged. With the action, they send solidarity with the revolts in the USA, in Chile and also send love to the anarchists hit by Op Bialystock and to the prisoners rioting in Italian jails.

You can read their report below:

2- HOMOPHOBES GET A FRIENDLY VISIT BY QUEER REBELS AND AUTONOMOUS SQUATTERS IN WARSAW.

A notorious hate group in Poland that travels around in a van promoting homophobic politics was stopped just in front of a seat in the centre of Warsaw. Even tho the police station is only 100m away, the cops didn’t arrive before their van was redecorated and their mirrors smashed. In their report they say “Spontaneous action took place in broad daylight in the very center of the city next to the police station, showing that the time of fear and defensive has passed.”

4- FIVE EXCAVATORS ARE SET ALIGHT IN GERMANY.

After a judge gave the go ahead to the construction of the new A49 motorway, ignoring the catastrophic consequences to the build, an autonomous group took it upon themselves to get rid of some of the machinery used to destroy the ecosystem.

5- AN OBITUARY FOR IDENTITY POLITICS, A GOOD LITTLE READ.

Flower bomb brings some certainly controversial points of view to the table with their wirte up on identity politics in the current BLM climate and how they affect the leftist and anarchist struggle. You might agree, or you might not, but it is a good read to read.

FLAMMABLE – A NEW SERIES.

Welcome to Flammable, a (hopefully) weekly series where we bring you news from other struggles than the animal liberation fight for you to expand, learn and radicalise. Snippets of different stories will be shared, with further reading attached to them via links. When reading this stories, remember that Unoffensive Animal has always been and will always be an insurrectionary anarchist collective that includes anti-speciesism within the political goals. “Keep it about the animals” ain’t gonna cut it with us.

1- COPS BURN EVERYWHERE.

The tragic murder of George Floyd has obviously arisen anger towards the state and its armed puppets across the globe. As well as inspiring tens of thousands of people onto the streets to protest, it has also pushed for autonomous groups to take action by themselves. Two (of the many) actions we would like to mention is the Cop Shop set on fire in Greece by the George Floyd Revenge Unit and the cop cars set alight in Vienna. You can read the reports in the links below:

2- STATE REPRESSION COMES DOWN HARD AND YOU SHOULD SHOW SOLIDARITY:

Many folks have been arrested at the BLM demos. The charges will range massively, but there is one case we believe folks can help immediately with. Sam was nicked in Brooklyn accused of throwing a Molotov to a cop car that apparently was full of cops. They are facing life in prison and charged with attempted murder. They have a gofundme Link to supp[ort their defence. Please if you have ONE DOLLAR to spares send it. Send whatever you’re able to send.

3- OPERATION BIALYSTOCK SEES SEVEN ANARCHIST COMRADES ARRESTED IN ITALY, FRANCE AND SPAIN.

Special cops in Italy threw a massive raid to arrest seven anarchists accused of a range of actions, from use of explosives to spray painting. This is yet another sho by the Italian state of their willingness to eradicate anarchism by throwing charges at folks simply for their political views. Regardless, as it is mentioned in the statement linked below, we should never fall for the “guilt or innocence” that the state tries to play when in reality we all are enemies of the state. Read up the statement about the arrests and please send some letters of support to the folks who already have an address.
