“Athens, Explosive attack on meat industry – Signal of solidarity to G.Michailidis and to Alfredo Cospito by Anarchists

With this text we take responsibility for the fire of 3 refrigerator-trucks of Davoutis SA, in Nea Ionia, Athens. All three trucks, which were parked next to the main shop-slaughterhouse of the company, were completely destroyed by the flames. This company has been active for decades in the trade of murdered animals, making it one of the largest domestic ‘meat markets’.

Our action is a signal of solidarity, complicity and comradeship with comrade Giannis Michailidis and his struggle, not only in the capacity of a prisoner with a “just demand”, but with all the perspectives and contents of struggle that as an anarchist he has put on the table of subversive fermentations.

With this action, therefore, we in turn want to put a small stone in the broadening of the struggle for freedom and the enrichment of its perspectives and practices. We want to reposition in the integral place it occupies within the resistance to the plundering of nature, the targeting and sabotage of structures that enrich themselves through the torture and mass extermination of non-human animals.
The creation of communities of resistance and direct action against development projects on remote mountain tops and rivers. The struggles for the militant defence of the few remaining urban green zones (such as those evolving in the hills, parks and squares of Athens). The collective vigilance and organisation for the protection and rescue of forests from the devastating fires of urbanisation. Our self-education on the destructive consequences of the continuous development of industrial civilization, on the evolving climate change and further radical analysis and action against the hourglass of destruction.

All of the above go together with the recognition of the importance of saving biodiversity and animal ecosystems, they go together with the struggle for the liberation of every individual, every animal from the confinement structures of the “food” industry, from the experimental laboratories of “progress”, from the hands of the “clothing” skinners. They go along with the coherent attitude of vegetarianism, to the point at which the opposition to the domination of man over other animals is completed at the individual level. An opposition that emanates from the most elementary features of counter-authoritarian thought and practice.

The connection between the causes of the incessant deforestation, the overwhelming monocultures of cereals to feed farm animals, the enormous contribution of the livestock industry to the greenhouse effect and the pollution of the subsoil and aquifer, the mass extinction of species, is more obvious than ever. It is the background of the packaging that ends up on the shelves of supermarkets and large markets like Davoutis’ and then on the plates of a connoisseurial society living in generalised indifference. A backstage characterized from beginning to end by torture, confinement, the blood of those who have no voice to speak the obvious: We are not objects, we are not commodities!

But beyond the imposed conditions and the effects of the modern dystopia of mass societies. The project of a life without imposition and exploitation is completed and acquires a comprehensive perspective when, through opposition to power as the driving force of the suffering of this world, we place at its centre, as inherent characteristics in the here and now, freedom, self determination, life itself, of all living beings. For just as was said above: no life can be sacrificed as an object, as a commodity!

Let this action be taken as an address, a call to the comrades who share a common perspective for total liberation and are in the unfortunate position of a marginalized minority, to disentangle themselves and to speak out, to act, to organize. The massive social acceptance enjoyed by all these structures that torture and murder animals and projects that destroy nature makes their infrastructures targets beyond suspicion, in many cases unguarded and vulnerable. They are everywhere, inside and outside metropolitan centres.
Finally, we declare that we are closely following the development of Giannis’s case. We do not intend to treat the prolonged torture of the comrade during his hunger strike and his continued incarceration through bureaucratic mockery as mere dots on a chronology of events. They are experiences of particular pain and cost to the life and freedom of the comrade… they are causes of intensified hostilities.

“We visited a health food store in Minneapolis for the third time. We filled a cart full with bison meat and left it in an aisle. The products will spoil fast for a $600 loss. It was asked if the store will replace the items. Yes. But after repeated actions they will stop ordering these products, causing economic damage to a small and niche industry like the buffalo meat industry. This would be most effective for stores smelling foie gras, cornish hens, buffalo meat, etc.”

Several members from De Zwarte Tulp opened the cages of the Aviary in Het Plantsoen in Leiden on the night of 7 to 8 November, as we had promised after our previous campaign.

For our reasoning, we refer you to our previous statement on our website. In this text we state that the freedom of the birds is priority number one and the confinement of the birds is morally unjustified. We would also like to emphasize that 0 birds were found dead as a result of our previous action.

We suspect this is the reason the municipality reacted differently this time. They can no longer claim that the escaped birds died. Instead, we are noticing conflicting reports from the municipality and outlets like Sleutelstad and Leidsch Dagblad.

The municipality claims that a cat was found in the aviary, this can be seen in photos. However, they also claim that thIs cat ate some of the birds, a claim which Unity then uncritically regurgitated and turned into their headline. This while Het Leidsch Dagblad previously said that the cat had timidly hidden itself away in a corner. On Tuesday, Sleutelstad even went so far as to suggest that we left this cat here, now they tell the same story as the municipality.

We want to make it clear that we did not leave this cat in the cage. We are against putting animals in cages, this includes cats. In addition, no evidence has been provided for the claim that the cat had eaten some of the birds. If this is actually true, we’d like to see some proof.

We are saddened to see that the municipality is not taking our concerns seriously and is making unsubstantiated claims again. This distracts from the point of our action: birds shouldn’t be forced into cages. Instead, they want to portray us as untrustworthy criminals who are inherently wrong. If the birds weren’t trapped, we wouldn’t have had to free them.

This is why we would like to ask people to not just believe everything the authorities and the media say without substantial proof to back it up. Please think critically.

Speaking of critical thinking, we find it peculiar that nowhere in the responses, both from the media and comments there, we’ve seen an answer to the question we raised. Is this because people would rather be caged from the moment they’re born, living the rest of their lives in the equivalent of a tiny student room instead of the vast outside world? We highly doubt it.

Therefore we’d like to ask again: wouldn’t you rather be free too?

We would like to ask the municipality to discuss our concerns. We have read the documents from the city council and we find it unacceptable and borderline undemocratic how the council has dealt with the Partij voor de Dieren. Take their concerns seriously as well.

In any case, it’s clear that the municipality is showing some hostility towards us.

Een aantal leden van De Zwarte Tulp hebben in de nacht van 7 op 8 november de kooien van de Volière in Het Plantsoen in Leiden geopend, zoals wij hadden beloofd na onze vorige actie.
Voor onze beweegredenen verwijzen we jullie naar ons vorig statement op onze website. Hierin stellen wij dat de vrijheid van de vogels prioriteit nummer 1 is en het opsluiten van de vogels moreel verwerpelijk is. Wij willen ook graag benadrukken dat er 0 vogels dood zijn aangetroffen als gevolg van onze vorige actie.

Wij hebben het vermoeden dat er hierdoor dit keer een andere reactie vanuit de gemeente is gekomen. De gemeente kan nu niet meer claimen dat er ontsnapte vogels gestorven zijn. In plaats daarvan valt ons nu tegenstrijdige berichtgeving vanuit de gemeente, Sleutelstad en het Leidsch Dagblad op.

De gemeente claimt dat er een kat is aangetroffen in de volière, dit is te zien op foto’s. Echter zeggen zij vervolgens ook dat deze kat vogels heeft opgegeten, een claim die Unity zonder kritiek heeft overgenomen en zelfs als kop van hun artikel gebruikt. Dit terwijl volgens het Leidsch Dagblad de kat zich schuw in een hoekje had verstopt.  Sleutelstad wekte dinsdag nog de suggestie dat wij die kat daar zouden hebben achtergelaten. Inmiddels vertelt Sleutelstad echter hetzelfde verhaal als de gemeente.

Wij willen duidelijk maken dat wij deze kat niet in de kooi hebben achtergelaten. Wij zijn tegen het plaatsen van dieren in kooien, dit geldt ook voor katten.  Daarnaast is voor de claim dat de kat vogels heeft opgegeten ook geen bewijs geleverd. Als deze kat daadwerkelijk vogels heeft opgegeten, dan willen wij dat graag zien voordat wij dat geloven.

Wij vinden het jammer dat de autoriteiten onze zorgen niet serieus nemen en opnieuw ongefundeerde claims maken. Dit leidt af van het punt van onze actie: vogels zouden niet gedwongen in een kooi opgesloten moeten zitten. In plaats daarvan willen ze door middel van ongegronde claims ons wegzetten als zijnde niet te vertrouwen criminelen die het per definitie aan het verkeerde eind hebben. Maar, als de vogels niet opgesloten zouden zitten, zouden wij ze ook niet hoeven te bevrijden.

Daarom willen wij mensen vragen om niet zomaar alles wat de autoriteiten en de media zeggen te geloven als daarvoor geen bewijs voor wordt geleverd en kritisch na te denken.

Over kritisch nadenken gesproken, we vinden het opvallend dat nergens in de reacties, zowel van de media en comments daar, een antwoord wordt gegeven op de vraag die we gesteld hebben. Is dit omdat men werkelijk liever in een kooi geboren wordt, om hun hele leven door te brengen in de grootte van een kleine studentenkamer in plaats van de wijde wereld daarbuiten? Wij betwijfelen dit ten zeerste. Vandaar dat we opnieuw willen vragen: Jij zou toch ook liever vrij zijn?

Aan de gemeente willen wij vragen om onze zorgen te bespreken. Wij hebben de stukken van de gemeenteraad gelezen en wij vinden het onacceptabel en ronduit ondemocratisch hoe het college met de Partij voor de Dieren is omgegaan. Neem ook hun zorgen serieus.

Het is in ieder geval duidelijk dat de gemeente zich vijandig naar ons opstelt.

“On the 7th November, after having heard of the arrest of four comrades accused of a slaughterhosue arson in Chile, we decided to take action in solidarity. We had been keeping an eye on a Northamptonshire sheep farmer that is known to neglect animals even more than the standard.

We paid a visit to one of his fields and discovered what nightmares are made of. From about sixty young lambs, we could count at least twelve bodies laying dead in the mud. Many others too weak to run, or completely stuck in brambles or barbed wire.

We took eight lambs with us, as many as we could fit, and drove them to safety. During the drive, more and more gruesome discoveries were found. Their excrements were full of worms, their spine could be felt all the way around and two of them were covered in flystrike. We hope all the lambs make a speedy recovery now that they have people around who care about their wellbeing and freedom.

This farmer deserves a lot more than just a liberation, and we can promise this is just the begining. He will pay for the enormous suffering that he inflicts on every single animal under his care.

To our imprisoned comrades in Chile, solidarity, love and rage.

You can imprison activists, but you can never jail the ALF.”

We went to rescue ducks. We took nine of them. One of them was lying on her back. Weak and light. In that moment I held her in my hands I knew it was bad. She died just a few kilometres from where she would have died if we hadn’t come.

We took eight of them home. To life. To better times.Thanks to everyone who is with us.”

Šli jsme pro kachny. Vzali jsme jich devět. Jednu, která ležela na zádech. Slabá a lehká. Už když jsem ji bral do dlaní, tak jsem věděl, že je to špatné. Umřela nám pár kilometrů od místa, kde by umřela, kdybychom nepřišli.
