Dressed in black, covered face and determination in the eyes of each of us, we pulled up to the farm. We climbed the fences, got in and quickly filled our boxes with the hens that will go to a good home. At the sanctuary we realised that as our tradition we had one more animal saved than planned.

According to local press, a group self-called “Lièvres Vénères Et Libres” reported having cut the fences of a hare breeder who sold 20ha of land to ATOSCA, who plans building the A69 road. “During a walk in the Dorset countryside, we happened upon a strange fence in a small area of woodland.
Behind the fence were several hundred young pheasants, who we realised had been bred to be chased across nearby fields and shot.
They looked so innocent, so unaware of the violent fate that lay in store for them, so we simply could not walk by.
After disconnecting and removing the battery for the electric fence, we removed several fence panels, and the door to the enclosure. Once we had emptied all of the feed and water, to ensure the birds had no reason to return, we helped usher them out of their prison and into freedom. Run free little ones, you’re safe now x”

14 pheasants was taken from one of these farms a few days before they would be released, and moved to a different forest, where hunting isn’t allowed. We know of the problems with releasing animals bred in captivity into the wild, but these pheasants would be released either way. The main difference is that now they were released into a forest where humans aren’t allowed to shoot them, instead of being released on “hunting grounds”.”

Today they can open their wings, stretch their legs, run, jump and breathe in freedom.

Luego de hacer un reconocimiento del terreno cortamos el alambrado para embarrarnos, cruzar el criadero y llegar a una de las naves más accesibles del centro de explotación. Alli estaban ellas, durmiendo enjauladas, sus heces llegaban casi a tocar sus patas deformadas con uñas y crestas largas, descoloridas. No pudimos liberar a todas, y sabemos que otras de sus hermanas ocuparán sus jaulas. Pero estas 12 no serán más explotadas, hoy pueden abrir sus alas, estiran sus patas, corren, saltan y respiran libertad.
