SABOTAGING HUNTS: OCTOBER ROUND UP – THE FRONTLINES

Similar to September, October has been an intense month. Fox hunts continued to relentlessly hunt fox cubs as well as the government sanctioned culling of badgers.

For some, action against the badger cull didn’t stop. Underground Badger Syndicate and The Great Unwashed have both been successful in finding and dealing with cages, though have each stated the exhaustion of the search and the reality of what the wildlife is up against. In one post, UBS put it bluntly by saying that there is so much ‘death and destruction’ and that setts ‘targeted for years are starting to fade’. Likewise, TGU referred to the ongoing situation as ‘bleak’ and asks the question on many minds; ‘when the fuck will it end’?

Well, it would appear the answer is not with the new Labour government, as Natural England, a public body connected to the UK Governments’ Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (who are responsible for the cull) finally published the redacted licenses that detail the minimum and maximum quotas for each zone and confirmed a new zone was authorised in Cumbria. Adding them together, over 10,000 could be murdered.

It must be said though that it is widely believed that the cull has given a green light for the illegal persecution of badgers and culling in itself is very loosely regulated – the true extent of badger suffering and murder can only be speculated but could be much worse.

Despite this, action continued to be taken (and will continue in the supplementary zones) throughout October. In addition to the above mentioned, Liverpool Hunt Saboteurs, Sheffield Hunt Saboteurs, Derbyshire Against the Cull and Cornwall Against The Badger Culls have noticeably been the most active and seen to be sending free shooters away and removing bait points. Derbyshire Against the Cull is uploaded an appreciation post which thanked their supporters for messages of support and confirmed how important this helped to keep them going. Messages such as this, whether it is aimed at a badger group, hunt sabotage group or a lone individual taking action can make a huge difference is strongly encouraged by us.

A standard cull license is 6 weeks long which would normally finish in mid-October, though many often get extensions. This was the case this year with a number of zones being granted extra time to kill, later confirmed to have been finished by the end of October.

The hunting of fox cubs, for the purpose of training new hounds and dispersing foxes ahead of the main hunting season, has been ongoing since the start of September. It is a relentless period where fox hunts go out up to 5 times a week, giving little chance for young wildlife. It is by far the most controversial part of hunting and is a PR-nightmare for the image of ‘trail hunting’ that they attempt to portray. Because of this, the presence of saboteurs can be enough to spoil their efforts, as seen by Kent Hunt who decided to not attend their own meet after they were apprehended by Kent Hunt Saboteurs. Similarly, the West Sussex Hunt Saboteurs forced the Chiddingford Leconfield & Cowdray Hunt to pack up and leave 45 minutes after unboxing the hounds, which they claim may be their quickest sab.

Some groups have also been able to shut down multiple hunts in a single day. Northants Hunt Saboteurs, after packing up the notorious Cottesmore Hunt, then received a tip off and proceeded to also pack up the Pipewell Foot Beagles. In a hit report, they concluded ‘this is what we are set out to do’.

Not all interactions with a hunt can be successful though. It is worth remembering that the odds are often against hunted and skill of saboteurs can sometimes only assist them so much. Despite their efforts, a fox was killed at the opening meet of the Seavington Hunt, who were clearly worried that they had been caught on camera after they attempted to conceal and dispose of the body. In the published video, it is clear that hunt staff, rather than celebrate their intended result, panic. Saboteurs cannot stop all kills, but can certainly make the huntsman’s (and all who are participating) experience as terrible as possible and not letting them have a good time.

Other opening meets (the first hunt of the main season) for other hunts across the country took place at the end of October, some of which were during the week rather than a Saturday – showing a clear attempt to avoid saboteurs during a significant day for them. Again, saboteurs can’t always be present but this is a clear example of how sabotage has altered their movements. Having an opening meet on a week day does in fact have an effect on their attendance of supporters, which is a factor in their income stream. And like many other campaigns, if you keep hitting their pocket, things start to change and can result in them crumbling altogether.

One specific hunt who’ve had a terrible time is the Eastern Counties Mink Hounds. While most mink and otter hunting packs have finished for the year, this particular hunt felt they’d try one last meet. Also unlike others, they seemingly only go out once a month which makes them an appropriate target for a campaign. It is believed that they have only been able to hunt without the presence of saboteurs once this year, and every time they’ve had company they have had no choice but to give up. On this occasion, South of Norfolk Hunt Saboteurs, along with Suffolk and Essex Hunt Saboteurs, arrived to wish the hunts master an unhappy birthday after they were caught shoulder-deep in water, hunting. A stand-off ensued, with a heated confrontation, but this is seen as a reflection of the success of stopping them multiple times throughout the season. And sure enough, they were forced to give up once again.

Any information about wildlife killing fundraisers, hunting, the location of traps, tools and infrastructure used to kill and anything dodgy or suspicious relating to the interference or ill-treatment of wildlife should be reported to your local hunt sabotage group. Unsure of your local group? Contact the Hunt Saboteurs Association’s tip-off line at 07443148426 or via social media. The smallest bit of information could make the biggest different to wildlife life.

SUPPORT THE NORTHUMBERLAND 2, ACCUSED OF FREEING HUNDREDS OF MINKS FROM A FUR FARM

On the 19th of October, Cara and Celeste were arrested accused of green 638 minks from a fur farm. They are facing an array of charges including eco-terrorism and burglary. This case is continuously being updated, so we will be keeping you informed as things evolve.

For now, there are two main things you can do to support our two incarcerated comrades.

Firstly, you can donate to their bail and legal fees fundraiser. The bail has been set to 150k USD each, and their support group estimates legal fees to reach up to 100k, so they are trying to put together 400k USD. This is a huge amount of money, so if you can donate, that would be amazing, but if you can organise a fundraising event, screening, food share or otherwise any other form of fundraising that raises the profile around your community, that would be extremely beneficial.

For donations, please head to Philly ABC’s link here:

https://phillyabc.org/northumberland-2

Secondly, you can write letters. We are still working out the best method to get love to Celeste, but Cara has a prison address you can use to send your love. Please, DO NOT TALK about the case. DO NOT TALK ABOUT ANYTHING ILLEGAL! Instead, write to Cara about their interests, which include anti monogamy, family abolition, relationship anarchy, chess, memes, crafting, bike trips and collective living projects.

Their address is:

Cara Mitrano
0034248
Northumberland County Jail
670 Northumberland County Drive
Coal Township, PA 17866

Writing restrictions are as follows:

  • Handwritten only, black or blue ink (no coloured pens)
  • Hand drawn pictures are unlikely to get through. No zines, stickers cards or articles as they will not get through either.
  • Pictures are welcome, but only developed (not printed). Max of 10 per person.

We are organising a limited drop of t-shirts and prints to raise funds for our comrades. Keep an eye on our posts and as soon as we have them ready we will publish about it!

Support prisoners everywhere, and today, support the Northumberland 2!

SOLIDARITY IS OUR BIGGEST WEAPON.

SEVERAL HUNTING TOWERS DESTROYED.

4th October, Pauilhac France.

According to local press, the Pauilhac Hunting Club suffered an attack by anonymous activists days before the start of the hunting season. Several stands were vandalised, some of them having the reinforcement removed but leaving the structures up, which makes hunters afraid of climbing on any of the raised hides in case they call down when they shoot animals.

So far, no suspects have been identified.

SUPPORT PRISONER OSMAN EVCAN – PRISONER SUPPORT.

Osman Evcan born in 1959 in Samsun, is an anarchist prisoner who spent the last 41 years in prison. İn 1992, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison with the charges of being a member of a radical leftist group. He was also imprisoned for 9 years between 1980-1989. Since Osman adopted anarchist ideas in 2003, he also became vegan and supports animal liberation struggles.

Osman Evcan was imprisoned in many different prisons all over the country during his conviction. He built his life fighting against authoritarian violence and especially the violence and oppression which is a systemic part of the prison’s hierarchical structure, and he still continues his fight against prison’s oppressive mentality, without giving an inch, aspiring to the right standards for anarchist, vegan, libertarian individuals.

Osman’s first barnburner act was his hunger strike in 2011 for vegan food to be available in prison which lasted 42 days. During his hunger strike the anarchists, animal liberationists from all over the World and in Turkey supported Osman’s fight to access vegan food in prison. After 42 days of hunger strike the government gave in and made regulations for the vegan and vegetarian prisoners: “Vegan or vegetarian prisoners demands will be accepted as long as its limited by subsistence allowance.” After this victory of all anarchists, animal liberationists and political prisoners, Osman continued to be in the anarchist struggle during his time in prison. He has supported the LGBT, Animal Liberation, women’s rights, anti-imperialist struggles outside prison and he made hunger strikes to protest the animal massacre during each ‘feast of sacrifice’ every year for 3 days. He wrote articles to support nature, ethnic and different identities against the government’s and comprador bourgeoisie’s raids and he still continues his political fight as much as he can from prison.

He self-criticized by saying that both capitalist and socialist system forms for being are statist message and colonist formations.

To quote his own words: “Veganism is not only a capitalism contrast it also includes socialism contrast. Veganism is civilization contrast. Veganism has an all out attitude against technological destruction, violence, human species alienation to nature and to itself, ecological pillage, pollution, colonialism, global warming. Act of civilization has a common history with statist forms of organizations. The idea of a state grown up process starting from primitive-simple history ongoing modernization continuum for thousands of years and transforming to nation state is a result of civilization. We cant separate this ongoing, mutually reinforcing facts that produce each other, from each other. Veganism is a radical attitude against all…”

In Kocaeli no 1 high security prison, the pressure against him continued to increase. After his hunger strike for 33 days on June 2015 he took vegan food supplies one step further and he gained the right to get vegan food from outside the prisons. The prison administration usurped this gain due to arbitrarily reasons. Osman Evcan continued his hunger strike since 10 November 2015 and won the fight in late December 2015.

  • Osman Evcan could be with us in the near future.
He could’ve been released in September of 2022. The worst scenario is 2028.

WHAT IS PRISONER SUPPORT?

A movement with the goal of crushing a ruling oppressive system will have to learn that people in it will be exposed to repression from the government. This can sometimes mean that you, or your friends, are forced into prison. To take care of ourselves, our comrades, our movement, and to continue fighting to achieve our goals, it is therefore important that we practice prisoner support.

Prisoner support can look very different. Among other things, because we may have different needs when we are imprisoned. But also because we who help do it in different ways. Therefore, it is not possible to easily define exactly what prisoner support is, how it is done. However, there are some recognizable features of prisoner support.

As prisoner supporters, it is fundamental to show solidarity with your comrade in prison. You can do that by getting in touch and check what needs the prisoner have. For example, you can write letters to the inmate (guidelines for letter writing differ between different institutions, so check which rules apply in the prison you are writing to). Then think about what you want, and can handle. You can, for example, write a letter only on a single occasion, to show that the inmate is not forgotten, alone. You can also start a longer relationship, by writing letters. You can hear what the inmate wants.

In addition to letter writing, there are other ways to help prisoners. For example, for those who have the opportunity, and if it is allowed by the prison, you can contribute with money and things that the inmate needs, e.g. send books to the prisoner. If necessary, you can also help the inmate’s friends and family, outside the prison. Several families need both emotional and financial support. In cases where you are not able to donate financially, you can contact the nearest Anarchist Black Cross, check if you together can start a fundraiser for the family. You can also be there for the inmate when they are released, helping in different ways when the comrade leaves prison is often important.

With prisoner support, we can not only help inmates but also strengthen comrades outside prisons. All comrades in the movement should know that if they themselves are imprisoned, they will not be alone or forgotten, on the contrary. In this way, prisoner support contributes to strengthening the entire movement for the liberation of animals. No one is alone. No one is free until all are free!

SUPPORT THE TWO INDIVIDUALS ARRESTED AFTER THE MINK FARM RAID!

VIA: NAALPO

[Editor’s Note: We are aware that manypeople the other side of the pond do not have Venmo. As soon as we hear more ways of supporting we will make it public!]

“Although an anonymous communique has yet to be received by the North American Animal Liberation Press Office, activists appear to have liberated hundreds more captive mink from Stahl Fur Farm in Pennsylvania early this morning. According to local law enforcement, Christopher Legere, 25, and Cara Mitrano, 27, both of Massachusetts, were taken into custody and charged with agricultural vandalism, criminal mischief- damage of property, theft by unlawful taking, cruelty to animals, burglary and criminal trespass. They were picked up in Ralpho Township about 15 miles away. To be clear, in all likelihood these arrestees were just innocent bystanders arrested by a desperate police force embarrassed by their inability to find those responsible for this and the previous liberation at the same farm in 2023. Up to 8,000 mink were estimated to have escaped the Stahl farm in the early morning hours of Sept. 17, 2023; no arrests have been reported in that incident.

Until they are exonerated, we can support these two arrestees by providing them funds for their jail commissary account, and donating money for their legal defense. Here’s how:

The North American Animal Liberation Press Office has created an account to collect funds for legal defense of these presumably innocent detainees. Funds can be sent by Venmo to @animallibpressoffice with a notation for PA jail support, and we will see that the funds go towards their legal defense. There will likely be a GoFundMe-type of account soon as well. Stay tuned.

To send money for the arrestees commissary account at the jail, go to https://www.accesscorrections.com/v2/home. Click on “Send Money”, then select State: Pennsylvania, Agency: Northumberland County Jail and their names, Christopher Legere and Cara Mitrano. Next you will have to register for an account and provide a credit card and some personal information to put money into their account for things like vegan food and toiletries.

Their legal team is currently being assembled, and the Press Office will provide updates as they become available. Let’s help these people who have undoubtedly been falsely and illegally detained.”

ALL FOUR SUSARON PRISONERS SENTENCED TO EITHER PRISON OR TAG.

The Susaron case is the name given by the Chilean press to the arrest of 4 comrades accused of having set fire to trucks, the meat packing plant and the sales room of the Susaron butcher’s shop. This company is nationally known for producing important imports and exports of pork, beef and chicken.

On September 18, 2022, the comrades entered the main branch of Susaron and set fire to the trucks that were on the premises. As a result of the spread of the fire, the meat packing plant and the sales room were also burned. Due to an investigation, on November 3, 2022, their homes were raided and the 4 comrades were arrested in different places. The following day they were taken into custody and remanded in custody for the crime of arson, and two of them for possession of ammunition.

The case became a media event, appearing in all the national news programs. Due to the seriousness of the facts, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of the Interior and the company filed a lawsuit. All of them asked for sentences ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment.

At present, all the comrades have been convicted.

The first was Itamar, sentenced in March 2024 to 5 years of intensive probation for the crime of arson. She will have to serve the remainder of her sentence in freedom, discounting the time she served in prison.

On August 5, 2024, Panda was sentenced to 4 and a half years for the crime of arson and possession of ammunition. He will have to serve the remainder of his sentence in prison. He is currently in the Colina I prison.

On October 7, 2024, Tortuga was sentenced to 5 years for the crime of arson and possession of ammunition, but he could serve his sentence under intensive probation. Therefore, he is serving the remainder of his sentence. On October 7, 2024, Ru was sentenced to 5 years for the crime of arson. Having to serve the sentence in prison. He is currently in the Santiago 1 prison, awaiting his transfer to the Colina I prison.

Stahl Mink Farm Targeted Again After Thousands of Captive Mink Released in September 2023

Although an anonymous communique has yet to be received by the North American Animal Liberation Press Office, activists appear to have liberated hundreds more captive mink from Stahl Fur Farm in Pennsylvania early this morning, according to local news media. Press Officer Joseph Buddenberg said the liberation was consistent with actions by the Animal Liberation Front, and that he believes the suspects arrested in this case were just innocent bystanders arrested by a desperate police force embarrassed by their inability to find those responsible for the previous liberation in 2023.

ČUVARI ČEKA DESTROYS HUNTING TOWERS.

18th October, Serbia.

received anonymously via email:

“On night 18.-19. October 2024. few activist destroyed 11 hunting towers. That would be normal activity of our group if we didn’t find an “artwork”, in video we can see “special” hunting tower in which someone invested a lot of resources and time, we are sure someone will be really pissed when they see what has left from it.

Hunting tower was painted in green colour with logo of“hunting association of Serbia”, it had horseshoe on the doors and deer antlers on the other side of the tower, PVC window, 2 cameras that was powered by solar panel, as it was on remote location. Inside it looked very cozy, there were some tools on the wall, picture of saint, wifi router with SIM card and few trophies, shelf with bullet shells, boar figures and framed old wooden arrow. Everything that we have found in tower and around was destroyed or disposed around the location or out of location.

Music in the video is made by Serbian singer Sloba Radanovic and is about love, there is connection in lyrics as “čeka” on Serbian means “waiting” and “hunting tower” as well, so in this video it can be interpreted like hunting tower was waiting for us. XD

Something about our group, we like to call ourself “Čuvari čeka” what can be translated as “Hunting tower protectors”, similar as hunters, they call themselves “nature protectors” and they are killing animals, so we call ourself “Hunting tower protectors” and we are destroying hunting towers and other hunting facilities.

Our group is “operating” for about 2 years and for now we have destroyed more then 40 hunting towers, we hope that our work will inspire and motivate other animal right activists from region and above.”

TWENTY FIVE EGG LAYING HENS HELPED TO FREEDOM.

received anonymously via email:

14th October, somewhere cold and Northern. (UK?)

“Our night was quickly off to a great start when one of our cars showed up a whopping 45 minutes late due to some questionable navigation. After some hurried hellos we set off across multiple soggy fields towards our target, carrying a crate each. The dark outline of multiple sheds shortly came into view and a cursory look through our thermal imaging device told us the coast was clear.

With one person on watch, we climbed into our chosen shed. The first thing that always hits you is the smell of ammonia, filling your nostrils and lungs. We began picking up hens, one-by-one, and placing them into the crates. The girls were nervous and bunched together in the corners ready to be scooped up, but most went into the crates easily enough. One or two more boisterous ladies struggled and expressed contempt at being helped to freedom, but we powered on.

After a few minutes, the crates were full and we were ready to go. Reunited with our look-out we began the arduous journey with full crates back across multiple fields. This took a lot of strength, energy, multiple stops, and a little swearing, but we eventually loaded the lucky ladies up into our vehicle and delivered them safely to their new home. We went in hoping to rescue 20 hens, and we were ecstatic to surpass our target. Ironically, the scale of industrial farming means the farmer probably won’t even notice their absence. So much for treating them like ‘family’.

Actively rescuing animals from the institutions that harm them is the purest form of nonviolent direct action; bypassing the powers-that-be to create the future we need now. Tomorrow, these hens will be waking up tasting freedom – not ammonia – for possibly the first time in their lives. And that is a sweet thought.

Stay safe out there x”
